Why is silicon carbide so expensive?

Silicon carbide is expensive because it needs to be produced synthetically through high-temperature processes that are very sophisticated, and the powders have to be extremely pure and fine particle size. Its sintering is around 2000°C, and hence, energy and equipment costs are very high. Machining is difficult due to the hardness, and diamond cutting tools and specialized equipment have to be employed. The overall manufacturing is long with low yields and technical demands. As a high-value material used mainly in aerospace, semiconductors, and other mission-critical environments, its minuscule size and high manufacturing complexity guarantee prices are kept high.

Is silicon carbide as hard as diamond?

Silicon carbide is extremely hard, ranking about 9–9.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, just below diamond, which is rated 10. While it is not as hard as diamond, it is one of the hardest industrial materials available, offering excellent wear resistance and mechanical strength.
