Precautions for Silicon Carbide Kiln Shelves

  1. Installation: Silicon carbide plates are tough. Avoid collision and falling during transportation and installation to prevent cracks or damage on the plate surface, which will affect its performance and service life.
  2. Offer expansion space: Silicon carbide plates will undergo some thermal expansion at high temperatures. Generally, appropriate gaps should be left between plates and between plates and kiln walls to prevent extrusion deformation or damage to the kiln structure by thermal expansion.
  3. Temperature control: Monitor the kiln temperature with precision so that it never goes beyond the working temperature of the silicon carbide plate.
  4. Prevent sudden heating and cooling: When heating and cooling the kiln, the speed must be controlled to avoid sudden changes in temperature. We recommend adjusting the heating and cooling speeds within a reasonable range. The corresponding values can be calculated based on the properties of the silicon carbide plate and the actual kiln conditions.
  5. Uniform placement: Place the materials uniformly on the silicon carbide plate to avoid heavy local loads. Uniform loads will cause uniform pressure on the silicon carbide plate, which will easily cause deformation or damage of the plate and affect its service life and normal operation of the kiln.
What are the best kiln shelves?

The best plates are made of high-quality heat-resistant materials (such as silicon carbide) that have excellent thermal shock resistance, low thermal expansion, and good load-bearing capacity. They should also have a smooth surface, even heat distribution, and be durable enough to withstand repeated firings.

What thickness are kiln shelves?

The thickness of the silicon carbide kiln shelves is usually between 3mm and 20mm. The thickness depends on the type of kiln, the weight of the fired items, and the specific requirements of the firing process.  Silicon carbide kiln shelves with higher thickness are usually used for heavier loads or high-temperature firing.

What are examples of refractory materials used for kiln furniture?

Common refractory materials include silicon carbide, alumina, cordierite mullite, corundum, graphite, etc. Among them, silicon carbide has high hardness, high thermal conductivity and good thermal shock resistance, can maintain good strength and stability at high temperatures, and has good oxidation resistance.

What do you coat kiln shelves with?

We usually apply a layer of aluminum oxide coating to the silicon carbide plate according to different usage and requirements of customers. The purpose of this is to prevent porcelain from sticking at high temperatures and keep the product clean and tidy during firing.

What are the advantages of SiC kiln shelves compared to cordierite ones?

In the vast majority of high-temperature industrial applications, silicon carbide kiln shelves outperform cordierite shelves. Silicon carbide (SiC) shelves can accommodate temperatures of 1650 degrees Celsius before warping occurs, whereas cordierite shelves will typically begin to soften at 1250 degrees Celsius. SiC has an extremely high thermal conductivity that will quickly heat and cool, resulting in reduced firing cycles. Improved efficiency can allow manufacturers to generate kiln products at lower costs. Because the SiC shelf has better resistance against deformation with heat and moisture, and greater longevity, it can be manufactured thinner. In turn, thinner shelves provide increased kiln capacity while maintaining improved efficiency. In addition, SiC consistently has better resistance against chemical attack while maintaining its integrity compared to cordierite, won’t warp or crack as the kiln is heated and cooled, and is expected to outlast the shelf. SiC shelves have a higher cost, but superior durability and efficiency can justify the long-term cost of an upgrade.

How to maintain SiC kiln shelves?

SiC kiln shelves are strong and durable when they have been properly maintained. SiC is a hard but brittle material, please do not drop the shelves or strike/shock them. Please keep the shelves in a dry place with good ventilation so they do not experience moisture stress when being heated. Avoid subjecting them to extreme temperature changes and allow for slow heating and cooling to help reduce thermal shock.

When cleaning a shelf, let it cool down completely before handling. Use a soft brush to sweep off loose dust or glaze on the surface. Do not use any metal objects, as this may scratch the shelf surface. If glaze residue remains, you may lightly sand the area with silicon carbide paper or a grinding stone, rinsing well with water. Please do not attempt to use chemicals to clean unless it is performed by trained and qualified professionals or the chemical has been sold specifically to clean SiC shelves and its instructions are followed. Finally, please take time to inspect the shelves for cracks or chips before you consider using them again. If the shelves are stored, please always store the boards vertically in storage to prevent them from warping or being damaged through pressure.

Do silicon carbide kiln shelves wear out?

Yes. But the process is slow than traditional materials like cordierite or alumina.

The main reason is prolonged exposure to high temperature, heavy load and repeated firing cycles. Deformation may be caused by high-temperature creep over an extended period of time. Rapid heating or cooling can generate thermal stress that leads to cracking.

Different SiC manufacturing types also have various performance. SSiC has the best resistance to warping under load. RSiC offers excellent thermal shock resistance and is less prone to cracking. RBSiC and NSiC provide good balance, but they soften or oxidize at extreme temperatures. So it’s necessary for correct operating to achieve a longer service life. Avoid overloading and uneven loading, follow gradual heating and cooling schedules and keep shelves clean from glaze or debris. Silicon carbide shelves can last for 3-5 years or even longer if used under the correct operating conditions.
