Why is silicon carbide plate price so high?

Silicon carbide plates are expensive mainly because of their complex manufacturing process and high cost. They require ultra-high purity and micronized powders and the shaping and cutting processes need extremely high temperatures and specialized equipment. Moreover, the low yield rate during production, with a significant number of plates being discarded during manufacturing, further drives up the cost. Despite increased production capacity in some factories recently, the price of silicon carbide plates remains high due to the complex manufacturing process and significant waste rate.

How long is the service life of silicon carbide plates?

Ordinarily, kiln tools are generally two to five years. However, the service life of silicon carbide plates with different processes varies due to the frequency of use, operation mode and furnace atmosphere.

What are the different processing methods of silicon carbide and what
are their benefits?
  1. Reaction Bonded Silicon Carbide/Silicon Infiltrated Silicon Carbide(SISIC): The silicon content in the material limits the maximum working temperature to 1380°C. Reaction-sintered silicon carbide has high strength, high hardness, high wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and good oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance.
  2. Oxide Bonded Silicon Carbide(OSIC): It is a machine-pressed type with expansion gaps on the plate. The maximum working temperature is lower than 1450℃. It is mainly used in daily-use ceramic factories, and it is mainly made into plates and brackets.
  3. Recrystallized Silicon Carbide(RSIC): It is one of the few materials that can be used as a bearing under air conditions above 1500℃. Using its high strength and high thermal conductivity, the silicon carbide plate can be made very thin, effectively reducing the volume of the kiln, greatly reducing the loading ratio of kiln tools and porcelain pieces to be fired, improving the utilization rate of the kiln, and realizing the rapid firing of ceramics, doubling the kiln products and reducing the unit energy consumption of the kiln. The thermal conductivity is more than 5 times that of general silicon carbide refractory materials.
  4. Nitride Bonded Silicon Carbide(NSIC): The maximum use temperature is within 1450℃. NSiC is mainly used in daily ceramic factories, such as tableware, stoneware, sanitaryware, handmade pottery and porcelain, artistic ceramics, and high-voltage electric porcelain, and is also widely used in the metallurgical and chemical industries. And its thermal shock resistance is better than RSiC.
  5. Sintered Silicon Carbide(SSIC): SSiC is resistant to all chemicals. Because it does not contain metallic silicon in its structure, it can be used at temperatures up to 1650℃ without affecting its strength. It has good thermal conductivity and excellent mechanical properties. Due to the limitations of the production process, the production cost is the highest. The overall weight of the kiln car is much lighter.
