What are silicon carbide tubes?

Silicon carbide tubes are the best choice to replace the quartz paddle for the following reasons:

①Performance: Silicon carbide tubes are more resistant to high temperature (even maintain 380MPa bending strength at 1350℃), the thermal expansion coefficient is low (4.0×10^-6/°C), and acid and alkali corrosion resistance is better, and applicable to harsh environments.

②Cost-effectiveness: The cost of silicon carbide tubes is approximately 2-3 times that of quartz paddle, but the service life is 4-8 times that of quartz paddle, and the overall maintenance cost is lowered by 30%.

③Production efficiency: Silicon carbide tubes are durable, can reduce downtime frequency, increase production capacity, and are particularly ideal for large-scale continuous production of semiconductor wafer production lines.

Is silicon carbide tube resistant to chemical corrosion?

Silicon carbide tubes have very high chemical corrosion resistance. Their crystal structure of a dense covalent bond gives the material very high chemical inertness. They not only withstand long immersion in severe acids such as hydrochloric acid and nitric acid and severe bases such as sodium hydroxide, but also withstand corrosive gas erosion from gases such as chlorine and hydrogen fluoride at high temperatures. They have become essential materials for the production of semiconductors, chemical metallurgy, energy conversion, and other industries to handle vigorous corrosive atmospheres.

Where are silicon carbide tubes mainly used?

Silicon carbide tubes with excellent high temperature resistance (above 1600°C) and chemical stability are used mainly for high temperature exhaust pipes and material conveying pipes for industrial furnaces, high temperature diffusion furnace gas carrier pipes for silicon wafer production in the photovoltaic industry, and heat exchange pipes for molten salt energy storage systems. In the meantime, silicon carbide tubes can also be used in high-level manufacturing industries. As the critical components of high-temperature diffusion furnaces in the process of manufacturing photovoltaic silicon wafers, they ensure process stability above 1200°C. They are used as temperature-measuring protection tubes for high-temperature components of engines in aerospace. With their “high temperature resistance + corrosion resistance + high thermal conductivity” characteristics, they have been used as significant functional components under harsh working conditions in diverse industries.

Are there different types of silicon carbide tubes available?

Different manufacturing techniques for silicon carbide tubes exist to satisfy various application requirements.

① Reaction sintering of silicon carbide. It is of medium density, low porosity, and small free silicon content (5%-15%). Its biggest advantage is low price, easy moldability, and high cost performance.

② Silicon carbide bonded silicon nitride (Si₃N₄). Silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) is the bonding phase to strongly bonds silicon carbide (SiC) particles. Free silicon has a maximum temperature resistance of 1450°C, suitable for the aluminum processing industry.

③ Pressureless sintered silicon carbide. It has high density and strength, high cost performance, and a maximum temperature resistance of 1650°C. It uses high-purity silicon carbide powder (purity ≥99%) and adds a small amount of sintering aids (e.g., B, C) under high-temperature sintering (2000-2200°C) at normal pressure. Density is ≥99%, but the cost is high.

④ Recrystallized silicon carbide (SiC). Produced by high-temperature vapor deposition or recrystallization process, it is directly bonded by silicon carbide crystals completely (without binding phase), and the maximum operation temperature can be as high as 1600°C (in an oxidizing atmosphere), which is suitable for higher-temperature applications.
